Publisher Description

A peace-loving senator faces a time of war in another thrilling Padmé Amidala adventure from the author of the New York Times best-sellers Queen's Peril and Queen's Shadow! Padmé is adjusting to being a wartime senator during the Clone Wars. Her secret husband, Anakin Skwyalker, is off fighting the war, and excels at being a wartime Jedi. In contrast, when Padmé gets the opportunity to see the casualties on the war-torn front lines, she is horrified. The stakes have never been higher for the galaxy, or for the newly-married couple. Meanwhile, with Padmé on a secret mission, her handmaiden Sabé steps into the role of Senator Amidala, something no handmaiden has done for an extended period of time. While in the Senate, Sabé is equally horrified by the machinations that happen there. She comes face to face with a gut-wrenching decision as she realizes that she cannot fight a war this way, not even for Padmé. And Chancellor Palpatine hovers over it all, manipulating the players to his own ends…

    I adore Padmé but…

I LOVE Padmé. She is an incredible character within the Star Wars universe and her work to end the Clone War deserved to be recognized. This book does a pretty good job at showcasing her humanitarianism and her political ambitions.

However, this novel falls into the trap that I see a lot of SW novels do. It just… lacks an overall plot. Now, this is okay (I enjoy character studies all the same), but it makes a less compelling and cohesive story. There’s Anakin/Padmé’s honeymoon which is interrupted because Padmé needs to go extract some artists? But the artists want to stay in Separatist space because spice is legal there? I’m not exactly sure what the drive to that story was. I don’t really have issue with these things HAPPENING it’s just… not that interesting? Once again, I love reading about Padmé—I just wish the story was more focused on her politics in the senate maybe? It would have served a good juxtaposition to Anakin running around on the battlefield. Padmé’s side mission was a tad forgettable to me.

Despite this—there were some genuinely very cute Padmé and Anakin moments I enjoyed. E.K. is also a master at dry humor, and I found myself chuckling quite often. Anakin is characterized very well and consistently with his Clone Wars self once he gets on the battlefield. I adore him when he’s with Obi-Wan and Cody. Anakin is a *bit* awkward when interacting with Sabé, but, once again, still consistent and pretty humorous.

P.S. If you’re upset about a trans character showing up for two pages, literally get over yourself. A trans character does not make a book “bad.” Judge a book for it’s storytelling.

    Amazing end to the series

I have loved all of the books in the Queens series!! This book was a good ending to the characters we learned to love! I would recommend this series to anyone. Another amazing book buy E.K. Johnston. I hope to see more books from other characters point of view ☺️

Do not buy if you are a conservative.

Really wanted to read this story but the author decided to virtue signal by injecting her woke ideology into the existing IP of Star Wars. Star Wars always has been an escape from the real world and should continue to be. If Johnson wants to spread her ideology she should create her own IP and see how well it sells rather than piggyback on a major existing IP.
