Publisher Description

The thrilling conclusion to the master fantasist’s epic, international bestselling Soldier Son Trilogy—an extraordinary adventure of love and intrigue, privilege and magic. . . .

“Robin Hobb is one of our very best fantasy writers. Her novels are always fresh, entertaining, and completely engrossing.”—Kevin J. Anderson, coauthor of Sandworms of Dune

Nevare Burvelle, an innocent man framed and convicted of terrible crimes including murder, has escaped the frontier town of Gettys and the soldiers—his former brothers-in-arms—who sentenced him to a wrongful death. Despondent and with nowhere to turn, he reluctantly surrenders himself to the Speck magic with which he has been cursed. But the decision is not without consequence, for now Nevare is at the mercy of his violent Speck self: a powerful alter-ego who will stop at nothing to drive the enemy Gernians away from Speck territories—and use his warrior’s insight to plan a vicious and horrifying attack on those who would do him harm.

But events unravel in unexpected ways, and now Nevare must bring his warring sides together to find lasting peace for himself and both his peoples.

Love the author

I believe that I have read everything that Hobb has published to date. That should let you know how much I enjoy her style. Nearly everything is written in first person, but often from the view of more than one participant.
This trilogy was entirely the view of one. You really get to know him well.
The first installment has a nice combination of positive, negative, strife and success. The second two installments have a very poor balance. Don’t even think about reading the trilogy if you have depression issues. There were many points where I thought about not finishing the story because it seemed to follow a path from dark to darker. I always however finish a book I have started unless it’s poorly written and lacks a story line. That is not the case. It is well written.
In closing, this is my least favorite Hobb performance. The balance is just off. After a certain number of dark pages I need a certain amount of sunshine. I will look forward to her next work and have confidence that it will be a good read!
