Publisher Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years.

What would happen if the world were ending?

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . .

Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

Amazing story, but a bit drawn out

This is a epic story of amazing proportions about humankind's struggle for survival after a catastrophic event destroys the moon. It's definitely in the realm of "hard" science fiction. Very long and drawn out technical explanations of machinery and technology. It can get a bit hard to read at times. It's a good read, but the ending was somewhat out of place. It jumps about 5000 years into the future and seems like the author ran into a wall of writers block. I understand the story but the timeframes involved are so fantastic it's hard to wrap your head around. Still a good read if you're a fan of his other works.

A Most Amazing Novel of Preservation of The Human Race

I find myself relating to many of the conflicted and gifted characters in this Earth to Space and Back Again tale. The first two chapters are an amazing story of how we come together to save the human species from an Earth Changing event that will keep you on the edge of your seat while providing you with NASA like science. To be part of this fascinating adventure is a gift from the author, who has brilliantly puppeteered a highly detailed scenario of humanities greatest catastrophe.

Solid piece of hard sci-fi

More conceptual and theoretical than most of his other work, but a welcome find for those who are tired of the barren state of theoretical science fiction. If you like Stephenson, you'll like this book.
