A young man with Down's Syndrome has been convicted of burning down his assisted living facility and killing five people, but a fellow inmate at his secure psychiatric unit has hired Thora to prove Jakob is innocent. If he didn't do it, who did? And how is the multiple murder connected to the death of a young woman, killed in what was supposed to be a hit-and-run?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In Sigurdard ttir's absorbing if unevenly paced fifth Th ra Gudmondsd ttir mystery (after 2013's The Day Is Dark), the Reykjav k attorney takes on a client named J steinn Karlsson, who claims that he wants his friend Jakob, who has Down's syndrome, cleared of charges that he set fire to a residential care facility where, 18 months earlier, five people died. Mysterious text messages guide Th ra to evidence of rape, financial irregularities, legal ethics violations, and other abuses, suggesting new suspects and motives for the crime, but key witnesses are less than forthcoming. As she seeks to exonerate Jakob, the manipulative, cunning J steinn insinuates himself into the investigation for reasons she can't identify. Sigurdard ttir adeptly weaves in the stark fallout from Iceland's recent financial collapse, while poignantly showing the despair permeating working-class families and the devastating impacts on society's most vulnerable members. A convoluted plot requires too much explanation, but readers fond of happy endings will feel gratified.

‘Twas a Very Hard Book to put Down
Someone to Watch Over Me by Yrsa Sigurdardóttir was part mystery, suspense novel and thriller wrapped in a neat and sometimes witty package that was overall pretty entertaining. Overall I believe the author did a good job of conveying the truth and sometimes disturbing nuances of certain events throughout the book that made it more suspenseful. The plot twist got me at the end. (>w<)
