Publisher Description
Speaking Up is a practical guide to helping children find the words, confidence and trusted people they need when something is wrong.
Children can stay silent about bullying, mistreatment and abuse for many reasons. They may fear they will not be believed, worry that telling will make things worse, think what happened is somehow their fault, or simply not know what to say.
This book helps parents and carers build an environment where children know that telling is safe and worthwhile. It explains why the way adults respond to small everyday problems can determine whether a child later feels able to speak about something much more serious.
Children learn that discomfort is enough reason to tell someone, how to recognise bullying, who they can turn to, and why having at least two trusted adults matters. They are also given practical language for speaking up for themselves and taught that if one adult does not listen or help, they should tell another.
For parents, the book provides a clear response when a child does tell: believe them, stay calm, thank them and act. It also covers responding to bullying, keeping a record when needed, and understanding serious risks online.
The aim is not to frighten children. It is to give them words, trusted people and the confidence to use their voice when it matters.
Written for parents and carers of children roughly aged 7–13.
Practical systems, not parenting theories.
B-Useful Systems: teach children how to think, not what to think.
