Publisher Description
Campbell finalist Sarah Gailey's hippo mayhem continues in Taste of Marrow, the sequel to rollicking adventure River of Teeth.
A few months ago, Winslow Houndstooth put together the damnedest crew of outlaws, assassins, cons, and saboteurs on either side of the Harriet for a history-changing caper. Together they conspired to blow the dam that choked the Mississippi and funnel the hordes of feral hippos contained within downriver, to finally give America back its greatest waterway.
Songs are sung of their exploits, many with a haunting refrain: "And not a soul escaped alive."
In the aftermath of the Harriet catastrophe, that crew has scattered to the winds. Some hunt the missing lovers they refuse to believe have died. Others band together to protect a precious infant and a peaceful future. All of them struggle with who they've become after a long life of theft, murder, deception, and general disinterest in the strictures of the law.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Gailey's delightful second novella of mishaps and mayhem in an alternate 19th-century American South picks up a few weeks after the events of Rivers of Teeth, and relies heavily on the reader's familiarity with the earlier volume. The outlaws who demolished the Harriet Dam and released feral hippos into the wilds of the Mississippi delta have been divided. Leader Winslow Houndstooth and con artist Regina Archambault have been frantically searching Louisiana for their compatriots; killers Adelia Reyes and Hero, believing that they are the only survivors, have been trying to stay one step ahead of U.S. Marshal Gran Carter and his warrant for Adelia's arrest. When Adelia's infant is kidnapped by the team's erstwhile employer, the two groups converge on Baton Rouge, bringing the unfinished threads of their job together at last. This sequel both revisits and completes the story of the first book, providing a reinterpretation without invalidating the original experience. While there are no new revelations about our heroes, Gailey deepens the existing characterizations and relationships that were a highlight of her previous work.

Continues the River of Teeth Story
“Taste of Marrow” is work of alternate history by Sarah Gailey, and the second novella in the River of Teeth Series. The main difference in this alternative world, is that in 1857 the Hippo Act is passed. This results in hippopotami being imported into the United States in an attempt to solve the nationwide meat shortage.
The swampy areas of the southern United States become a breeding ground for riding hippos as well as meat hippos. Hoppers are hippo-riding cowboy-like characters. Into this interesting alternate world we find our story set in Louisiana.
This novella picks up shortly after the events of the first. Our characters have become separated into two groups, and seek to be reunited. However, a kidnapping changes things. The machinations of others are about to draw in our characters to near Baton Rouge.
It’s sort of like a western, but with modern and diverse characters. The story is interesting , and you find yourself caring about these colorful and larger than life individuals. It’s an enjoyable read, as long as you don’t try to take it too seriously.
Lots of action
Good characters that are non-binary for a change.
Thank you Sarah
The inclusivity of the world that is created is extremely refreshing. I love seeing a full spectrum of characters interacting and working together. Thank you for writing gender nonspecific fiction that isnt smut
