A Change of Circumstances
Alex and Jocelyn are friends and their stations in life are much closer at the beginning of the book when her is the estate manager of the duke who is sponsoring the translation she working with her brother on. She was promised to someone else, but her threw her over early in the book. Alex can’t marry anyway as his position was contingent on being unwed. But then his circumstances change and the duke wants him to the marry the lady he chose. For being highly intelligent Jocelyn lacked common sense at times. She kissed Alex when she knew they couldn’t be together, thought she could just find work as a companion to someone who would let her work with her brother whenever she wanted, and tried to perform tricks on a borrowed horse with no one around to help her if she got hurt. I did laugh over Alex and Jocelyn’s back and forth banter and I did not know that a famous language company was named after a historical artifact.
