The Emergency Crown

An attack on the first elected Assembly gives Daniel Mercer the authority he once feared in others.

The chamber has barely opened when violence shatters its claim to normal government. A hidden warning file suggests someone inside Daniel's security apparatus anticipated the danger. Intelligence Director Corwin Hale presents evidence linking an armed domestic network to a foreign power and the still-unidentified force behind the EMP. The conspiracy is real. The attribution may not be.

Daniel accepts sixty days of emergency power. Raids disrupt planned attacks, but each success makes restraint harder to defend. Travel papers spread. Hostile presses close. Appeals vanish. Ration access becomes a weapon of compliance while officials insist that every restriction is temporary.

At the same time, Laura develops a life-threatening infection. The treatment she needs is reserved for families with political access, and she refuses to let Daniel's rules become optional when they reach his own home. Saving her could expose the privilege inside his emergency system. Honoring her refusal could cost the person whose judgment he still trusts most.

Daniel must decide whether danger justifies powers that work precisely because no ordinary law can stop them. The longer the emergency succeeds, the less likely it is to end.

The Emergency Crown is Book Fifteen of The Ash Commonwealth, a serialized post-apocalyptic political thriller series intended to be read in order.
