Publisher Description
The quiet village of Bradfield should offer Dr Sylvia Marks the refuge she seeks when she returns home from her time in a field hospital in France in 1918. However, she is still haunted by the disappearance of her lover, ambulance driver Anna Masters, two years previously. Settling back in as the village doctor alone in her large family house is more difficult than she realised it would be after the excitement of front-line medicine. Then curious events at a local farm, mysterious lights, and a hallucinating patient’s strange illness make her revisit her assessment of Anna’s death on the battlefield.
Lucille Hall-Bridges is at a loose end now her nursing work is finished. Her Mama and Papa are perfectly happy for her to pursue any or no career or social round; but she felt useful as a nurse and now she really doesn’t know what to do with her life. She hopes going to stay with her friend Sylvia for a while will help her find a way forward. And if that involves staying at Bradfield with Sylvia ... then that’s fine with her.
But Sylvia is still focused on finding out what happened to her very good friend Anna three years ago; and the unbelievable events at a local farm over the course of the last year don’t seem to have helped her let that go.
Will the arrival of Lucy in Bradfield be the catalyst that allows both women to put their wartime stresses to rest? Can Sylvia move on from her love affair with Anna and find happiness again with Lucy, or is she still too entwined in the unresolved endings of the past?
NOTE: This story contains mention of domestic violence that happens to side characters off-screen.

ROMANCE & PARANORMAL
Dr. Sylvia Marks has taken up residence in a small village after working in a field hospital in France. Walter Kennett, who served twenty years in the Army also has joined her and works as a nurse. Returning has been heartbreaking for Sylvia as she lost her lover, Anna Masters, during the war time in France, but she also made a friend, Lucy Hall-Bridges.
Housekeeper, Annie Beelock expresses her concerns to Sylvia about Arthur Webber who lives in a small farm in the village. When Sylvia attends to Arthur, she has mixed feelings about his mental issues. After much assessment she decides to let Arthur stay in his home with the hopes that his brother Matthew (Matty) returns from France soon. As Sylvia gets word Arthur is worse, she visits him again and his secrets become much clearer to her. What’s revealed has her thinking back to three years later, when Anna Masters, disappeared. Soon after, Matthew returned from France, Sylvia didn’t return to see Arthur and he passed away. After some time had passed, Robert (Rob) shows up in a panic at Sylvias. There’s been an accident at the farm, now owned by Matty and his partner Rob. When she helps Rob and Matty, with Peter Marchant, it makes her determined to find Anna, with the possibility that she’s caught in the strange world on the other side of the Border.
With all the time that passes, Sylvia struggles with her grief and feelings for her lost lover, Anna. New, growing feelings toward Lucy also become a complication. Lucy is always there to give understanding, comfort, support and love to Sylvia. Sylvia has to come to grips with old and new feelings and where it will take her.
A.L. Lester creates an outstanding first story in the “Bradford Trilogy”. Lester brings out the paranormal with a melding of heartbreak, jealousy, fears, and a beautiful budding romance. It also reflects a time when women are just being accepted in careers, the possibility of the right to vote and change from clothes too hairstyles and so much more in what is a male dominated world. They still have to fight intolerance and obstacles, even though they served as doctors and nurses during the war.
The “Border Magic Universe” delivers more about the women of that time, which is a new, fresh and wonderful surprise. Lester gives us the female perspective of the continuing story that originated as “The Gate” and then expanded with “Inheritance of Shadows” from the “Lost in Time” series.
I think “The Border Magic Universe” is an excellent name and a magnificent start for the continuing stories of the “Border”. I’m excited to see what AL Lester has planned for Sylvia and Lucy, as the world around them starts to change. I also love the cover it’s a perfect fit for the time period!
