APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Two bestselling authors (and longtime friends) come together to launch a new teen fantasy series that echoes Harry Potter but still feels fresh. Twelve-year-old Callum Hunt is a well-known troublemaker in the leafy Southern U.S. town of Asheville. Call’s widower father—an eccentric antique store owner—has revealed almost nothing about the family’s tragic past. However, he’s taught his only son to fear magic and, above all, the Magisterium: the underground school where young magicians are sent to apprentice with master mages. Authors Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments) and Holly Black (Doll Bones) create a vivid, mysterious world for their charming and relatable characters. If The Iron Trial is indicative of the rest of the Magisterium series, we’re in for a wonderfully entertaining ride.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Set in a magic-inflected version of the present-day U.S., this first title in the Magisterium series combines the talents of Black (Doll Bones) and Clare (the Mortal Instruments series) in a thrilling coming-of-age story that embraces fantasy tropes while keeping readers guessing. Twelve-year-old Callum Hunt has been raised to distrust magic. Mages killed his mother, and his father has warned him that the Magisterium, a school where young mages are trained, is a deathtrap. Callum's attempts to fail the entrance exam go awry, and he is chosen to apprentice under Master Rufus, along with fellow students Aaron and Tamara. As Callum, Tamara, Aaron, and their classmates embark on their first of five years of schooling, Callum realizes how little he knows of his own heritage. The strange, subterranean Magisterium is vividly rendered, and a string of ominous revelations will leave readers eager for future installments. Fans of both authors will enjoy getting to know this well-rounded cast in the first steps of their adventure. Ages 8 12.
Customer Reviews
Brilliant.
It's the next best thing since Harry Potter. Just when you think you have it figured out, they surprise you. Definitely worth reading.
Nice book
I really liked this book. Although a lot of people say that it is a copy of Harry Potter it isn't. Although it does have the whole two boys and one girl thing and the main bad guy would like nothing more than to kill the main character. Every one is using this as an excuse to hate on the book. In my opinion the book is different in its own way and it has its own storyline that is so much more different than most of the other magic books out there.
Spoiler alert
Near the end of the book there is MAJOR PLOT TWIST with Callum Hunt
