The Question Beyond

Some answers lead to a higher question.

The corridor is still open.

After humanity discovers that memory can become both a bridge and a prison, Mara Venn faces a new threat—one that cannot be defeated by weapons, intelligence, or perfect information.

Beyond the known network lies the Horizon, a boundary where prediction ends. On the other side are civilizations that made different choices about memory, identity, and freedom.

When reconstructed humans are manipulated through memories of the people they lost, Mara discovers the most dangerous form of control: certainty disguised as compassion.

Then an ancient system known as the First Answer reveals what happened to civilizations that surrendered their uncertainty. Their memories survived—but their freedom did not.

Mara must decide whether humanity should preserve everything, forget what hurts, or find a third path where memory remains a choice.

As the Daedalus crosses beyond the Horizon, Mara discovers that the original signal was never simply a call for contact. It was the beginning of a question that civilizations across the universe have been asking for ages.
