THE INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER
From bestselling author Ashley Winstead comes a chilling psychological thriller that explores the dark heart of digital obsession, collective grief, and what happens when murder becomes entertainment.
After losing her father, college student Jane Sharp finds solace—and purpose—in the strange intimacy of online true crime forums. Among armchair detectives and anonymous sleuths, she becomes someone new: sharp-eyed, fast-thinking, celebrated. But when the brutal deaths of three college girls in Delphine, Idaho spark a viral frenzy, Jane and her online friends become part of the investigation.
This time, they aren’t just watching from behind a screen. This time, they’re in it.
But every clue uncovers more contradictions. The town seems scripted, the police too polished, and the killer always one step ahead. As Jane inches closer to the truth, she begins to suspect they’ve walked into something far more dangerous than a mystery.
Now, one year later, Jane is ready to tell the true story. What she’s about to reveal will change everything.
Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, This Book Will Bury Me is a gripping confessional of digital justice, dangerous fame, and the price of being seen.
Tense, emotional, and thought-provoking, This Book Will Bury Me is more than a thriller—it’s a warning. For anyone who’s ever binged a crime doc, shared a theory, or chased justice from their phone, Jane’s confession will haunt you long after the final line.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Unsettled by her father’s sudden death, Janeway Sharp seeks understanding and belonging with a band of true-crime enthusiasts. But her newfound fixation with digital detective work pulls her deeper into a dangerous investigation. Author Ashley Winstead’s riveting thriller takes inspiration from actual cases, grounding her novel in reality. She also explores the complex relationships among news outlets, social media, amateur detectives, and law enforcement. We especially enjoyed the camaraderie between Jane and her web-sleuth “family." When they dig up a cunning killer, it could bring justice and glory—or land them on the wrong side of the crime-scene tape.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The real-life 2022 University of Idaho murders form the bedrock of this disquieting thriller from Winstead (Midnight Is the Darkest Hour). Jane Sharp, 24, has just dropped out of college in Florida and sunk into a profound depression after the death of her father. Seeking distraction, she stumbles into the true crime forums of TheRealCrimeNetwork.com, first as an observer and then as a quasi-vigilante who tries to track down suspects. Soon, Jane forms an alliance with four other true crime obsessives, who fuel her fascination and offer her a sense of belonging through wide-ranging, late-night chats. When three young college students are murdered in an Idaho sorority house, the message boards light up, as users dub the killer the Barbie Butcher and frustrate local police with their relentless speculation. After three more young women are slaughtered, Jane and her fellow online gumshoes decided to meet in person for the first time in the small Idaho town where the murders took place. There, they confront the limitations of parasocial sleuthing and dig up even more darkness than they expected. Winstead ably tackles themes of grief, loneliness, and obsession, but the hefty page count drains the mystery plot of some tension. Still, it's a chilling and thought-provoking effort.
Customer Reviews
Strangely good
Felt odd reading this as it so closely relates to a very well known crime, but the author did a great job keeping the plot interesting and different from the real story.
Good writing, good story, but predictable…
I enjoyed the story and I appreciated the fact that the author included the foreword at the beginning. However, I predicted the ending from the beginning of part two, and I usually do not find any thriller/mysteries predictable (maybe i am naive, maybe not…), but I found it to be very clear who was the criminal was at that point in the book. Made the second half not as interesting because of it.
Couldn’t put it down
This book kept me wanting more. Well written, fast paced, juicy….you get it all with this one. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop! A top 10 of all time for sure!
