Publisher Description
"A gripping story that is equal parts shocking, unnerving, and thrilling. Goldin takes the ‘true crime’ trope to new and unexpected territory.” —Karin Slaughter, New York Times and #1 international bestselling author of Girl, Forgotten
Rachel Krall, the true crime podcaster star of Megan Goldin’s acclaimed The Night Swim, returns to search for a popular influencer who disappears after visiting a suspected serial killer.
Terence Bailey is about to be released from prison for breaking and entering, though investigators have long suspected him in the murders of six women. As his release date approaches, Bailey gets a surprise visit from Maddison Logan, a hot, young influencer with a huge social media following. Hours later, Maddison disappears, and police suspect she’s been kidnapped—or worse. Is Maddison’s disappearance connected to her visit to Bailey? And why was she visiting him in the first place?
When they hit a wall in the investigation, the FBI reluctantly asks for Rachel Krall’s help in finding the missing influencer. Maddison seems to only exist on social media; she has no family, no friends, and other than in her posts, most people have never seen her. Who is she, really? Using a fake Instagram account, Rachel goes undercover to BuzzCon, a popular influencer conference, where she discovers a world of fierce rivalry that may have turned lethal.
When police find the body of a woman with a tattoo of a snake eating its tail—identical to a tattoo Rachel had seen on Bailey’s hand—the FBI must consider a chilling possibility: Bailey has an accomplice on the outside and a dangerous obsession with influencers, including Rachel Krall herself. Suddenly the target of a monster hiding in plain sight, Rachel is forced to confront the very real dangers that lurk in the dark corners of the internet.

A Page Turner!
Rachel Krall, a popular crime podcaster, is back, but this time she is trying to figure out why a popular social media influencer, Maddison Logan, goes missing.
Just one phone call changed Rachel Krall’s life. When the FBI called to ask Rachel to fly to Florida to help out with an investigation involving Terrence Bailey, who is about to get released from jail for breaking and entering. But in fact, he is thought to be connected to 6 women’s deaths, but nothing has been proven. Maddison Logan goes missing after visiting Terrence Bailey. Will Rachel be able to help or will she take it too far and end up with her life on the line?
Definitely a page turner, with an unexpected plot twist that will keep you guessing until all is revealed! A highly entertaining book, so perfect for any vacation!
Even though this book is number 2 in the Rachel Krall series, it can easily be read as a stand alone.
Not my style
I gave the book a 3-star just for having a good ending. But with that said, it didn’t remotely get good until 85% finished. I struggled to stay awake throughout the entirety of the book. Never read the first book, so I’m not sure if Rachel is truly that deserving of all the “smarts” given to her. In this book, she is even smarter than the FBI and able to figure things out way in advance of a team of specialists. So maybe just not my type of “thriller”.
Loved!
Literally could not put this book down. When the FBI contacts a true-crime podcaster, a Pandora's Box of secrets unfolds. The book is well-written and the last paragraph of every chapter makes you want to read the next one - it's hard to stop once you start. The plot is easy to follow, the characters are interesting and likable, and I learned something new about social media influencers in-between murders and mysteries.
