This dual-timeline fantasy from Martha Wells, author of the wildly entertaining Murderbot Diaries, will make your head spin…in the best way possible. Kaiisteron, an immortal demon overlord known and feared by all as the Witch King, awakens to discover that his body has been killed and his spirit trapped in a cage that limits his powers—and things just go downhill from there. Wells drops the brooding, sarcastic Kai (and us readers) right into the middle of the story, using alternating chapters to bring us up to speed on the rules of her magical world and the global politics behind Kai’s predicament. This is the sort of book where you’ll want to keep going back to the map and the cast of characters presented in the prologue, but Wells’ trademark dry wit and masterful world-building make it entirely worthwhile.

Hugo, Nebula, and Locus award winner Wells takes a break from her sci-fi Murderbot series to delve into a complex secondary world fantasy exploring the past and present of Kaiisteron the Witch King, a demon in human form. The past story line follows Kai's first possession of a human body and his relationship with Prince Bashasa, who orchestrates a coup against the autocratic Hierarchs to avenge his sister's death. The present begins with Kai abruptly waking to find his consciousness separated from his body—which is now a corpse entombed in a watery prison—and setting out to investigate his own murder. Among those helping him are Ziede Daiyahah, a witch searching for her missing wife; Sanja, a street urchin; and Ramad, a vanguarder and historian. The enormous cast is difficult to keep track of and the dry, workmanlike prose that works so well when Wells is writing robots can make it difficult to feel particularly close to any of these living characters. Laudably, however, Wells treats sexuality and gender (demons can move between male and female bodies) with a refreshing matter-of-factness and depicts the cultures of this world with an anthropologist's care. Fans will not be disappointed by Wells's return to fantasy.

Witch King Delivers More than a Story
I have to admit I love all of her books but this story let me see the beauty in her stories. She takes complex and alien characters and gives them rich,human and less than perfect traits and builds characters that we all can identify with. To be able to embrace difference and to love and identify it, this is the jewel of a message.
This jewel wrapped in hope and optimism for a better future is a story worth reading and sets meaning to our own lives.
