ze Roof Apocalyptic Storm Moments 5

The beauty of having a singular setting for shooting (such as a rooftop) is that it cultivates a simplicity for creative expression. Especially when the literal / figurative focus for that imaging outlet is storms. It alleviates concerns for varying locations and allows one to react to how the weather behaves. With a 360 degree point of view, ze roof opens a plethora of photographic possibilities, limited only by which direction leads the camera eye.



Another perk of ze roof is that during an active storm most people would never think to stand in such an inhospitable environment. With Covid 19 entering it’s 3rd year, this allowed me the freedom to capture moments sans mask (though I kept masks on my person just in case the circumstances changed). Eliminating distractions encourages the flow of ideas when deciding the importance of what’s being seen. Lens choices, perspectives, compositions, freezing motion or letting it blur - elements to determine on the fly.



A disturbing trend which occurred with frequency throughout this storm season was the weather itself. The amount of impactful storms was minimalistic, which was bewildering considering how it began. The month of May contained quite a menagerie of stormy moments, followed by nothing in June! July and August came and went, with Mother Nature providing glimpses yet to many without much substance. The impact of global warming is affecting the world in varying degrees, and the NYC area is sadly not strutting as much as it used to when it comes to storm activity.



I’m hopeful that the future will provide more opportunities, yet I made as much lemonade out of lemons that I could this season.
