Daughter of the Forest is a mixture of history and heritage, myth and magic, legend and love.
Lord Colum of Sevenwaters is blessed with seven children but it is Sorcha, the youngest child and only daughter, who alone is destined to defend her family and protect their land from the invading Britons. For Sorcha is the only one who escapes the cruel influence of Lady Oonagh, her father's new wife.
Exiled from Sevenwaters and cast out into the forest and the terrifying world beyond, Sorcha falls into the hands of the feared enemy. Now she is torn between a life she has always known and a love that only comes once.
Fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley, Isobelle Carmody and Robin Hobb will love Juliet Marillier.
Customer Reviews
Loved the it moment I read it.
I love this book. I love everything about it. It's a beautifully written story that takes you on a journey both inspiring and heartfelt. For those that like a fast pace epic journey, this is probably not the book for you (but I still strongly recommend giving it a shot). This story takes a slower pace in drawing the reader into the first part of a historical world in which marillier masterfully creates, and (maybe more importantly) it allows the reader to feel the torrent of emotions that flow through marillier's characters which have been skillfully written. I've re-read this story and all in this series of seven waters numerous times and i never fail to utterly enjoy each page, each turn of events and to shed a tear or two (sometimes more).
If you're like me and read to be lead somewhere different, to a place you can almost feel and touch and where characters are so alive you feel like you know them, then I highly recommend this book to you. I read it first as a teenager and it made a great lasting impression on me through the heroics and bravery which, though set in a fantasy world, are definitely not lacking in realistic courage and feats (though maybe somewhat idealistic, but who reads fantasy and isn't a tad bit of an idealist?). I hope you enjoy this book and the rest of series as much as I have.
All time favourite author
This original trilogy (DotF, SotS, CotP) is the reason Marillier is one of my all time favourite authors. I was captivated by the story, and I love to revisit these characters again and again; it never gets old. ❤
Rewrite of Hans Christen Anderson novel
Well written, but what’s put me off is that the story is basically a rewrite of Hans Christen Anderson novel - the wild swans. Felt it spoilt it when I already knew what the outcome with her brothers would be. Feels like if you where going to steal someone’s work you would at least acknowledge them in the summary
