ONLY THE MOORLAND HIDES THE MACABRE...
Consultant surgeon Tora Hamilton has moved to remote Shetland to be with her husband. She moved to have a family....
Not for this . . . In the peat soil near her new home she uncovers a perfectly preserved woman's body. Runic symbols are carved into her skin. Her heart has been cut out.
And as Tora begins to ask questions around the island, she receives her first threat . . .
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Set in the Shetland Islands, Bolton's compelling debut pits young obstetrician Tora Hamilton, newly arrived from London, against local Nordic folklore, suspicious islanders and a monstrous but brilliant plot with mythic overtones. While digging a hole in a field for her dead saddle horse, Tora discovers a young woman's corpse, with Viking runes incised in the back and the heart torn from the breast. How long the body has been buried is uncertain, but during the autopsy Tora realizes the victim had recently given birth. Longing for a child of her own, Tora dissects away layer after layer of deceit and deception involving everyone she used to trust, especially her husband, Duncan Guthrie, who grew up on the Shetlands and chose the site of their new home. Though Bolton's operating-theater realities and her characters' powerfully inhuman motivations may jar fainthearted sensibilities, this promising new talent delivers some profound insights into the eternal nature of evil.

Excellent read
Fantastic thrilling book. I really enjoy this author but this is the best book so far. Gripping!
A gripping story with unexpected events
When i started reading this book i for some reason thought it to be more of a drama based book than thriller. I ended up taking a year break after 20 pages. Then i decided to give it a fair chance and read it properly. I finished the book within the next two days. Rarely do i experience a book that good.
The story itself doesn't actually start off slowly. We are directly thrown into what will be one of the main plots throughout the book. From there one more and more things will happen and things are getting quite complicated fast. I love the long row of plot twists you simply didn't expect. Just because how well done it is i cannot, not love it.
A great book i recommend for anyone who likes a good thriller.
