Publisher Description

Siege of Terra Book 8, Part 3

It all comes down to this final confrontation – the Emperor versus the Warmaster. The father versus the son. After 63 novels and a slew of short stories, omnibuses, audio dramas, and more – this is the End and the Death.

READ IT BECAUSE

The Horus Heresy series reaches its dramatic climax. After years of civil war, the Emperor and Horus clash aboard the Vengeful Spirit in an epic battle of blades, wits, and wills. See how the greatest conflict of the age plays out, and follow fan-favourite characters from across the saga as they desperately try to influence the outcome.

THE STORY

The Great Angel, Sanguinius, lies slain at his brother's hand. Terra burns as reality itself unravels, and the greatest bastion of civilisation teeters on the brink of annihilation.

Desperate defenders gather, banding against the rabid traitor hordes. The Hollow Mountain, host to the pilgrims of Euphrati Keeler, is one of the last redoubts held by the Dark Angels while the unclean host of Typhus lays siege. Malcador the Sigillite sits ablaze on the Golden Throne, trying to buy his master more time. But time is running out...

Guilliman races across the stars to reinforce the Throneworld. Will he return to ashes, where a Warmaster of Chaos has ascended to godhood, or will the Emperor have triumphed? And at what cost?

Absolutely Epic.

A fantastic book from beginning to end. Gutted it’s the last one, looks like I’ll have to start all again now and reread the entire series 😅

Experimental and superior to the two previous volumes, yet somehow an unsatisfying ending

I don’t envy Abnett his challenge in writing an end to the Horus Heresy series he began. An end to the entire 30k cannon really, and the start of the 40k. We all sort of know it, and yet we want surprises. In this regard, Abnett delivers. Surprises there are. And the final fight is certainly epic, perhaps overly so, overly drawn out. I still think three volumes was excessive and an editor should have constrained him to one. But epic it is. It’s also experimental in its writing style, with different uses of person for different characters. Which is all well and good but is also distracting and I am not sure this finale was the right moment to start getting artsy. It’s not like these same tricks were consistently applied from the start. Some threads are tied but many many questions remain - and this left me feeling confused and cheated. The main protagonist remains unknowable, deliberately so, but earlier novels offered more nuanced glimpses into the nature of the Emperor. This, at the end, added nothing. More of Horus perhaps. And I feel that was a lost opportunity. The Four Chaos Gods are also ciphers here and that too is a pity and non event. The Horus Heresy series was excellent, Siege of Terra much less so, so this continues that trend. A shame, but worth the read for those who have got thus far. I look forward to the Scouring being a return to form, and hopefully revisiting those loose threads. Too much in the shadows is not always a good thing. Those of us who grew up with this have been in the shadows long enough. Time for some rays, sorely lacking here.

Disappointing ending

Dissapointing ending to a great series.
