1916: the Western Front. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong, and the wind in the leaves in the trees. Where has the mud, blood and blasted landscape of No Man's Land gone?

2015: Madison, Wisconsin. Cop Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive (some said mad, others dangerous) scientist when she finds a curious gadget - a box containing some wiring, a three-way switch and a...potato. It is the prototype of an invention that will change the way Mankind views his world for ever.

And that is an understatement if ever there was one...

Good but.....

.....sort of fizzles out with no real explanation as to what has been going on

Really really enjoyed this book, great idea and originally executed, fans of Pratchett will love the humour, fans of Baxter will love the story. Hope they continue the story together!

This is nothing like Iain Banks, oh somebody mentioned parallel universe.....oh it must be the same book then!!!
If the Mr & Mrs negatives of this world, looked up from their constant complaining, they might actually see things from a new exciting & different angle, if I know Banks, his work is very dark, yes compelling & ground breaking, but also much more violent & hard core. On the other hand T. Pratchett is a totally different writer, any well read, literate person would see that. I for one actually like the sound of T.Ps slant more so than Banks, & will definitely look to purchase this book when it comes out.
Just one more dig at the critics......the book isn't out yet so, let's not jump to conclusions yet, unless of course you are judging a book by its cover!!
