THE NEW CAUTIONARY TALE OF OBSESSION, LOVE, JEALOUSY AND DECEPTION FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF OUR HOUSE AND THE OTHER PASSENGER
Wrong time. Wrong place. Wrong man.
Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most sociable guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour.
That’s until Beth announces the creation of a nature trail on a local site that’s been disused for decades and suddenly Alex is a changed man. Now he’s always watching. Questioning. Struggling to hide his dread . . .
As the landscapers get to work, a secret threatens to surface from years ago, back in Alex’s twenties when he got entangled with a seductive young woman called Marina, who threw both their lives into turmoil.
And who sparked a police hunt for a murder suspect that was never quite what it seemed. It still isn’t.
No one else could have done it. Could they?
‘The best Louise Candlish novel yet’ Lisa Jewell
'I'm blown away by how good it is. A gripping tale of love, secrets and deception - it's the best psychological thriller I've read in a long time' Mark Edwards
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
This ingenious dual-timeline psychological thriller has more twists than a bowl of fusilli on a rollercoaster. In the present day, Alex is a slightly antisocial but otherwise boringly normal middle-aged husband in leafy suburbia. In the past—a vividly evoked portrait of Britpop-era Camden Town, all pub gigs and back-to-mine parties—he’s a carefree twentysomething who falls head over heels for an enigmatic girl at work called Marina. When Alex’s wife launches a successful campaign for a local nature trail and builders begin digging up a long-disused patch of woodland behind their house, past and present collide in beguiling ways. Alex becomes paranoid and haunted by nameless dread. Long-buried secrets rise to the surface. So who was the murder suspect 20 years ago? And who was his victim? Nothing is quite as it seems in this endlessly surprising story of forbidden love and friendship, obsession and identity, coercive control and crimes of passion. Tightly plotted and tangled with Hitchcockian intrigue, it hums with suspense. Let your nerves be tingled but try to predict the next plot development at your peril.

Wow
I really enjoyed this book I found it to be captivating and well written. I was able to kind of guess some of the twists but I put that down to having read loads of thrillers and just being able to read between the lines. I really like this author and this book did not disappoint at all. I would 100% recommend
Brilliant!

Full of the usual Candish twists, this book kept me engrossed, all the way through. Great story line with unusual but believable characters. Thoroughly recommend
