Part Two: Healing

“Daddy!” Astrid called as the group started to appear in Splendor Plains. “I’m home!”
Sophie and Keefe exchanged looks, like “What?”
“Oh, good, you’re made it back,” said Elwin as he walked down some stairs. “Don’t hug me yet,” he added with a laugh. “I’m covered in glass.”
“Glass?” Astrid said.
“Uh huh,” he replied. “I was brewing an elixir and Bullhorn knocked over the bottle. It smashed on the table.” He gestured around and said, “Do I want to know what you all are doing here?” He pointed at Sophie and the others. Then he noticed a thin silver band on Tam’s forehead, and two metal cuffs on his wrists. “Oh dear.”
Astrid nodded. “The Council put that on him.” She placed her hands on the headpiece, suddenly drawing them back.
She stared at her hands. “Huh. That was…weird.”
“What do you mean?” Dex asked, doing the same thing as she did when he placed his own hands on the Ability Restricter. “Wow, that was intense.”
“‘Intense?’” Elwin said.
“Yeah. No matter what I tell it to do, it ignores me.”
“Same,” agreed Astrid.
Just then, an elf wearing Emissary robes came over to the group, saying, “The Council would like to speak to you.” Then he light leaped away.
Everyone exchanged glances. Then Tam said, “I’m guessing this isn’t because they want to expand Team Valiant?”
“Woah,” said Keefe. “Did my Tammy Boy just crack a joke?”
“Keefe,” said Sophie patiently. “We—”
The Councillors suddenly leaped onto the property. Alina was noticeably missing.
Astrid narrowed her eyes at them. “Why are you here?”
“Several things,” said Councilor Emery. “You attacking a Councilor is one of them.”
Astrid narrowed her eyes. “Tell me the password to the Ability Restrictor and we’ll call it even.”
“Password?”
“Yup. You guys made that thing stay on for at least a year—even though he’s probably not gonna last another minute. So—password. Now.”
“I know of no such thing,” said Councilor Emery. “Alina might know, but she’s not here, is she?”
“I know the password,” said a woman quietly. She had bronze skin, long brown hair, and a pearl circlet. She snapped her fingers, and the Ability Restrictor disappeared from Tam’s forehead and appeared in her hand. “But it wasn’t needed.”
Astrid growled softly under her breath. Then she said, “What about the wrist pieces?”
“Aren’t you a Conjurer?”
Astrid snapped her own fingers and the wrist pieces appeared in her own hand. Tam flexed his wrists and gingerly felt his forehead. “Wow.”
“I think we’re done here,” said Astrid. “Thanks for…all that.” She nodded at the Conjuring Councilor and said, “See you around, Liora.”
Councilor Bronte pulled out his pathfinder. All the others—except for Liora—leapt away on their own beams of light.
“Have you been admitted into Foxfire yet?” Liora asked.
“I’ve been a little busy with the assignment you gave me,” she replied flatly.
“You have my sincerest apologies,” Liora replied. “But I am still wondering if I could be your Conjuring Mentor.”
Silence.
Then Astrid said, “I would be honored.”
“Wonderful,” said Liora as she glittered away.
“Well,” said Elwin. “That’s something you don’t see often, a Councilor offering to train you in your abilities.”
“Yeah,” murmured Astrid.
