Publisher Description
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Mara Jacobs comes Book 5 in the Anna Dawson mystery series.
My name is Anna Dawson, and I’m on the road to recovery.
There are A LOT of potholes.
It was just supposed to be helping out a friend. Doing a solid. Paying it forward. All that stuff we talked about in gambling recovery.
I wanted to help others because I was in such a good place.
I’d started looking into becoming a Private Investigator. Taking classes and doing research. I’d even gone to a gun range. And then a prime opportunity presented itself. I really thought things were falling into place.
Two dead bodies later, I’m rethinking all my choices.
I have to pull off the bluff of lifetime. Because my life depends on it.
*NOTE: The case is solved, the perpetrator revealed, but there are a few threads that are continuing on through the next book and the series.
Books in the Anna Dawson series thus far:
1 - Against The Odds
2 - Against The Spread
3 – Against The Rules
4 – Against The Wall
5 – Against The Grain

Read it twice!
Anna Dawson has no idea how cool she is. In some ways she must—being known as the Black Widow in the professional poker world and having a ton of money banked from her expertise. But like the rest of us mere mortals, Anna has regrets about her past and concerns about her future that make her unaware of just how cool the rest of the world must see her.
This is the strength of Mara Jacob’s writing. She’s got me believing Anna and all her supremely cast cohorts are real. I so enjoyed delving deeper into all of them in Against the Grain.
With the painful angst of trying to beat a sports-betting addiction in play and confronting the worst part of herself for good rather than evil, the ever-heroic Anna is rounded up for questioning in the murder of Johnny Aces—up and coming Vegas loan shark. She doesn’t care about Johnny, but she does care about the three other suspects and the kid on the lam who owed him money.
Once again her amateur detective skills kick in while she maybe, sorta, kinda, considers becoming a private investigator. After all, she can’t stay home and watch football, she’s got no real job skills, she can’t (or shouldn’t) play poker. What’s a girl to do?
Through twists and turns and ups and downs Mara Jacobs finally delivers us to THE ending. One so rich and juicy you’ll be sad but completely satisfied when you hit the last page.
Great read. Highly recommended.
