A former SEAL and his best friend’s widow find that the path of healing leads to forbidden feelings in this emotional western romance for fans of Maisey Yates and Jennifer Ryan!
For widow Tess Valdez, there are two things keeping her husband’s memory alive: her daughters and the ranch he loved. And Tess has thrown herself into caring for both. But when the wild horses that roam her land are threatened, Tess seizes the opportunity to become their advocate—and finds a new purpose that is hers alone. She expects resistance from some of the locals, but what she doesn’t anticipate is needing the one man she can’t have by her side…
No one understands Tess’s pain better than SEAL Silas Beck. He lost his best friend on the battlefield, and he’s spent every day since living up to the promise he’d made Jace to take care of the family he left behind. Falling for Tess was never supposed to happen, and Silas knows he should leave for both of their sakes—but he can’t say no when she asks him for one last favor. Even if staying means confronting feelings they’d both rather ignore . . .
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Richardson shows off her gifts for tight plotting and creating well-rounded characters in this irresistible cowboy tale, the second in her Star Valley series (after Wishing on a Christmas Cowboy). Two years after the death of Tess Valdez's Navy SEAL husband, Jace, Tess is doing the best she can to raise her young daughters, Morgan and Willow, and keep their family ranch running. She has some help from some of Jace's former platoon, who recently settled in Star Valley to found Cowboy Construction and are eager to support Tess and her children—Silas Beck most of all. Jace's best friend, Silas had a rough childhood followed by a rougher deployment to the Middle East, and he blames himself for Jace's death—which only compounds his guilt over being so attracted to Tess. He believes himself unworthy of joining her family, and it's up to Tess to prove him wrong. Endlessly loyal Silas will especially appeal to those who like the strong, silent type, while Tess's emotional journey is sure to resonate with anyone who's lost a loved one, especially in combat. There are some tears along the way, but the happily ever after will warm readers' hearts. This is a must-read for cowboy romance fans.
Customer Reviews
Didn’t connect with the characters
I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it. The series centers around three ex Navy Seals who has come back to work on the ranch to take care of their friend Jace Valdez”s widowed sister, Tess and her two daughters. Silas Beck is one of those Seals, has some serious guilt issues, mainly his growing attraction to Tess. It has been two years since Jace’s death and Tess is starting to live again. When a jerk at her brother’s engagement party makes a snotty comment implying that she should forever mourn her husband and wallow in grief, Silas tries to comfort her and they end up back at his room. Afterwards, both of them try to forget what happened, but they cannot deny the attraction. Silas wants to leave, but Tess is endangered when someone starts shooting wild houses that roam near her ranch. He has to stay to protect her and her daughters, but how will they handle the growing attraction? Have you ever read a blurb about a book and say “This sounds like the perfect book for me!”? That is how this book was for me, but sadly, I just didn’t connect with either character. I know that most romances follow a formula, but most authors put their own spin on their book. This book felt a little lackluster and cliched. It wasn’t bad, just not as enjoyable as the first book. I do enjoy this author, so I hope this is an anomaly. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for my honest opinion.
