The Burning Fields

Someone is burning the county's future, one field and one record at a time.

The epidemic has receded, but Woodford County is no closer to peace. Seed barns ignite across the winter countryside. Land records disappear. Hay, tools, and preserved food vanish into smoke while growers, refugees, laborers, and town residents arm themselves against one another.

Daniel Mercer is given the investigation because he can reconcile the county's ration, labor, health, and property records. The evidence points toward Asha Raman, the agricultural specialist who has openly challenged his government. Her knowledge connects her to every target. Her movements seem to appear in the surviving logs. The case is almost too complete.

Emma calls it a manufactured accusation. Carter Vale uses the fires to attack compulsory land claims. Miles Rourke demands collective detention before the winter stores are gone. Daniel must follow evidence through records created by frightened officials, coerced workers, and institutions with reasons to protect themselves.

Every delay risks another fire. Every premature arrest could turn hunger into civil conflict. As the attacks move from supplies toward the county's institutional memory, Daniel must determine whether one saboteur is exploiting old grievances or several factions are hiding inside the same panic.

The Burning Fields is Book Eight of The Ash Commonwealth, a serialized post-apocalyptic political thriller series intended to be read in order.
