Clarke (One of the Girls) paints by numbers in this derivative outing centered on a deadly girls' trip. Lifelong friends Liz Wallace (a doctor), Joni Gold (a rock star), Helena Hall (an event planner), and Maggie Padden (an artist) have a tradition of taking an annual vacation together; this year, Liz, who's teetering on the edge of a messy divorce, has chosen a four-day hike in Norway. When the women arrive near Blafjell, the mountain they plan to ascend, they learn that Maggie closely resembles a young woman who disappeared there a year earlier. After the four friends start their climb, they face harsh weather and a devastating landslide, which turn out to be the least of their worries—soon, they begin to fear the locals may not be so friendly, and secrets they've concealed from each other bubble to the surface as they fight to stay alive. Clarke alternates each woman's perspective, but fails to make them more than archetypes, and few readers will be surprised by how the plot unfolds. Chapter-ending cliffhangers make it easy to keep reading, but this is a largely formulaic affair.

Really incredible writing, great plot twist. I almost hit snooze with parts of it but it redeems itself quickly. I loved it, really.
Everything you could want in a psychological thriller!
Another stellar performance from Lucy Clarke! The follow-up to “One of the Girls” is much like its predecessor & I was not disappointed. Set in the beautiful mountains of Norway, “The Hike” focuses on a group of women heading out for some fun & adventure. It becomes quickly apparent that darkness is all around them & danger is lurking during their mountain getaway.
In the spirit of her last book, Clarke delivers with twists & turns that will give you whiplash. The final pages were shocking, surprising & heart-pounding - everything you could possibly want in a late summer psychological thriller!
A heart-pounding and perilous journey to the top!!
Lucy Clarke always takes us away to a far away place that most of us will never see. In her last book, “One of the Girls” she took us to a Greek island and while reading, I envisioned myself sitting by the pool having drinks with my best friends, while taking in the beautiful scenery. In her amazing new book, “The Hike”, Liz, Helen, Maggie and Joni traveled to Norway to hike a treacherous mountain that has a history of danger and the unknown. Liz organized the trip for her best friends and she was the only one who was completely committed to the journey. Personally, I would have passed on this trip and chosen a fun week at the beach. I felt bad for Maggie because she had to leave her precious daughter Phoebe, with her ex-husband. She had no desire to hike anywhere and had second thoughts about going at all! As the women prepared for the hike with their brand new hiking boots and heavy backpacks, I began to worry about their safety.
All the women had secrets they were hiding from each other and it was just a matter of time, as tensions grew, that they shared their stories around the campfire. While reading, I had the sense that someone was following them, lurking in the lush forest, waiting for the right time to approach them. Was this person friend or foe, offering help or leading them further into the darkness? The mountain held many secrets and as they forged ahead, seeking shelter during a storm, they stumbled upon something that would change their lives forever. Would they make it to the end of the hike, or would the terrain be too difficult? Would they all still be friends after the biggest secret is revealed? Ms. Clarke had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book and once again she surprised me with a shocking and heart pounding ending!
