Publisher Description
Get to know the detective in charge of Copenhagen's coldest cases in the first electrifying Department Q mystery from New York Times bestselling author Jussi Adler-Olsen.
Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl—who didn’t draw his weapon—blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: a liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.
Darkly humorous, propulsive, and atmospheric, The Keeper of Lost Causes introduces American readers to the mega-bestselling series fast becoming an international sensation.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Adler-Olsen, Denmark's leading crime writer, makes his U.S. debut with the superlative first in his Department Q series. In 2007, Copenhagen homicide detective Carl Morck narrowly cheats death when he and two colleagues are ambushed while checking out a crime scene. Morck is shot in the head, but one of his brother officers is killed, and the other left paralyzed and suicidal. When Morck finally returns to work, friction with his colleagues leads his boss to transfer him to head a new unit, Department Q, tasked with resolving "cases deserving special scrutiny" from across the country. While the purpose of the assignment is to get the difficult detective out of the way, Morck, who's initially content just to kill time, finds himself revitalized by a once high-profile mystery the 2002 disappearance of a prominent and attractive female politician, Merete Lynggaard. The pages fly by as the twisty puzzle unfolds. Stieg Larsson fans will be delighted.
Customer Reviews
Excellent; intense
This was a great read. As an American who has never traveled to Scandinavia, it was a little hard to get started with, much in the same way as "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was - but well worth the investment of time. Great characters; very complex; injured people following through in disturbed and evil ways. Morck and his sidekick were great - I hope to see them again.
Exceptional
Great fun. Maybe a little slow at first but it really builds momentum. Am looking forward to reading more by this author. It is a disservice to compare the author to Stieg Larsson. Although I'm also a fan of Larsson this writer is quite different. This book is less Scandi-noir & violent and Adler-Olsen invests his main characters with humor. The plotting is excellent and you don't have to ignore some of the preposterousness of the "tattoo" books. I couldn't help but think what a great movie "Keeper" would make. Then I read on IMDB that such a movie exists. Hurry up Netflix get it in your system!
