Lotusfall’s Performance chapter three!
Over the next moon, Lotuspaw trained day and night for her clan.
“How’d you beat me AGAIN?” Thornpaw and Slatepaw had both complained in unison after Lotuspaw had beat them both in a sparring session. Lotuspaw had shrugged, not wanting to break her promise to Sunheart and the others by telling the waking cats about them. “I practice a lot, I guess. Come on, I’ll show you how I did it…”
And her fellow apprentices weren’t the only ones who had noticed her knack for battle training; the warriors all gossiped about the young yet talented apprentice.
“She’s my apprentice,” Lotuspaw had overheard Lakepool bragging to some other RiverClan warriors, her eyes shining with pride. “So of course she’s talented.”
And now today, all of the apprentices were gathered around in camp, talking about their training.
“I hate battle practice,” Thornpaw growled, with a look at Lotuspaw. “You’d think we’re preparing for a war with how often we train.”
“We’re training so often because you’re so bad at fighting,” Slatepaw retorted. “Obviously.”
“That’s not nice,” Lotuspaw told her. “He’s really good, just—“
“Not as good as her,” Patchpaw and Saltpaw both said at the same time; the white apprentice looked uncomfortable when Patchpaw gave him an icy look.
“No, that’s not it!” Lotuspaw cried, looking at Patchpaw for support. “I practice all the time to perfect my techniques, not just at fighting, but with stalking and honing my senses. Right, Patchpaw?”
“Of course,” he nodded. “If you put in the effort, you’ll get the results. It’s plain and simple. You need to try harder if you want to get to our level.”
Whitepaw rolled her eyes and nudged her brother. “You’re so mean, Patchpaw. You’re not better than us just because you can fight.“
With a snort, Thornpaw stood up. “Whatever, I get the picture. I’m a terrible fighter.” The brown apprenticed turned to leave, and Slatepaw got up and padded after him.
Lotuspaw watched them go sadly. She was proud of herself that she was learning so quickly, but she was driving her friends and kin away from her. She glanced towards the medicine den, where she could see her sister sorting through herbs.
Lilypaw doesn’t hate me for being so good at hunting and fighting, Lotuspaw told herself firmly. I still have her, and Patchpaw, and the other apprentices.
But when Lotuspaw looked around, Patchpaw was gone. And when she met the gaze of Whitepaw and Saltpaw, her heart sank.
They both looked at her with different expressions on their face—Whitepaw looked annoyed, and Saltpaw had a look of worship in his eyes—but they both still had a distance to their looks, as if Lotuspaw were in a different clan.
“I… I can help you train,” she told them, sounding somewhat desperate. “I can show you the tricks that I use. I can—“
“We don’t want your help,” Whitepaw said roughly, stalking away. Saltpaw watched her go in disbelief, and then turned to give Lotuspaw an apologetic glance.
“Sorry, she’s… All the other apprentices are a little put out, because all every cat talks about is you.” He paused, and looked at his paws and meowed softly, “I think it’s great you’re so good at training. You’ll make a great warrior one day.”
And then he left, too, leaving Lotuspaw alone in camp. She stood there for a few seconds, trying not to cry.
But then, with a sudden burst of intent, she bounded over to the river and threw herself into it. She sank to the bottom and curled up, letting the familiar feeling of the water and the silence calm her down.
When she returned to the surface for a breath of air, she saw Curlsplash watching her from the shore. Swimming over to him, Lotuspaw meowed a quiet greeting.
“I don’t mean to bother you,” the deputy began. “But you and the other apprentices have been chosen to attend the Gathering tonight.”
Dejected, Lotuspaw just nodded and disappeared back underwater.
Great, she thought to herself, watching a school of minnows swim past her nose. I get to be surrounded by cats who don’t like me. Lotuspaw tucked herself into a tighter ball, her lungs aching for air but her body not willing to to surface just yet.
