Publisher Description

Lady Arianna Blackthorn is a woman on a mission--she intends to rescue her brother, Jak, from the infamous BleakHall prison. BleakHall is a Triple Max Penitentiary where only the worst of the worst are sent--a males-only facility where not even female prison guards are allowed. So how can Ari infiltrate this fortress? With the use of a holo-projector that makes her look male (the important parts anyway) she's determined to get in and she has a foolproof plan for getting both herself and Jak out...or so she thinks.

Commander Lathe is a Blood Kindred who lost his younger brother to the horrors of BleakHall. He is on a mission to go undercover and collect evidence against the cruel and ruthless prison guards who run it and the Yonnite Mistresses who own it. He also has a plan to get out but it's going to take some time and while he's waiting, a strange new inmate comes to BleakHall--a boy called Ari.

Ari is in over her head from the minute she steps through the prison gates. She is immediately singled out by Tapper, BleakHall's most ruthless sexual predator, as his next conquest. Only Lathe's timely intervention saves her from a fate worse than death...and death itself. Lathe moves Ari into his cell to keep her safe but he has no idea she is really a female and Ari doesn't dare to tell him.

Can Ari keep her secret from the big Kindred? Can Lathe sort through his confusing feelings for the "boy" he has taken under his wing? (Why does he smell like a female? Why can't Lathe stop thinking about him...stop wanting to touch him?) Can the two of them rescue Ari's brother and escape from the maze of sadistic guards, psychopathic prisoners, and ravenous lashers--the huge carnivorous cats that roam the corridors of BleakHall at night waiting to devour any inmates attempting to get away?

Loved

Let me start by saying this book is not for everyone. It is a very dark book but in my eyes it has to be since the story is about these two being in a very bad prison. I think the author did an amazing job portraying what life would have been like in this type of prison. Me personally, I loved the book. I went into reading the book knowing a little what to expect.

Latha was a blood kindred but not your normal blood kindred. He was what they called a Kill-All or a Cure-All. His essence could be use in different ways. I personal would love to see more books on this type of Kindred. I found Latha very sexy. I loved that he had chosen to be in the medical field. It was perfect for his special gift. I think there is so many areas that the author could go when it comes to this type of Kindred.

Ari aka Lady Arianna Blackthorn was a very strong woman. I just loved her. I tried to picture whether I would have the strength to enter a prison pretending to be a boy to save someone I cared about. It took so much strength and courage. She put herself in a very dangerous situation. It was actually more dangerous then she had ever dreamed.

Though I am truly not into MM books this was different because Ari was a woman that was actually pretending to be a man. I love that we got to see the battle that Lathe was having with himself. Here he was a straight male finding himself attracted to what he thought was another male. I think the author did an amazing job describing his struggle and all this inward battles.

There is a lot that happens in this story and let me tell you there are some pretty steamy parts as well. Can I just say WOW. I was so squirming in my seat and it was not helping that I was reading this at work..LOL

I am happy that I got a chance to read this book. I am looking forward to the next book that will be coming out in the Kindred Bride series.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Not The Best But Good Given the Material

I applaud efforts made by authors to go into something they themselves have never ventured into before. It takes courage to make that step and I think the research that must’ve been done for the atmosphere/environment was good.

That said. It was a bit disappointing for a main story. Maybe it might’ve been better as a novella? I love a good gender bender, but this one was a bit meh. And there were some things where I just could’t let my imagination get lost in this one because I’ve read enough Kindred books to wonder how the author thought she could get away with this. For instance, Lathe is fooled into believing Ari is a boy. Fine. She has her tools. But when they fool around, even in the dark, with his good kindred night vision, and kindred nose, and kindred tastes, homeboy can’t tell there is something a bit off with Ari. We’ve seen Blood Kindred in action. I am convinced even if the body could fool him, the fluids couldn’t.

Maybe if you’ve never read one of these books before it’d be fine. But as someone who has read them all, it’s hard to get over certain inconsistencies.
