Spain, July 1809
Lieutenant Richard Sharpe faces not only great danger on the battlefield but also, even more dangerous, treachery within his own ranks. But as the enemy approaches, he must pick up his rifle and prepare to lead his men against the French at one of the biggest, bloodiest fights of the war – the Battle of Talavera.
Out of the mist comes the roaring, undefeated army sent by Emperor Napoleon. Over their heads soar the Eagles, the standards touched by the hand of the Emperor himself. And boldly waiting for them is Sharpe . . .

Brilliant book.
I started the Sharpe series by watching the TV series. This kicked off my interest in history, not having read any of the books. I've now started reading the books some 20 years after seeing the TV series; always imagining Sean Bean and the TV series characters. A superb way to extend the experience and get immersed in living history. It's great to read fiction whilst hopefully improving our knowledge of the actual historical events. I've read the Thomas Hookton books as well and Bernard Cornwell is certainly my favourite author of the present. As a confirmed philistine and non-reader I found these books enthralling doubly so because they convey the the broad historical facts.
A great read.
Sharpe's Eagle is super. =3
