Lotusfall’s Performance chapter two
That night, Lotuspaw went to sleep, and she found herself in a forest choked with shadows.
Confused, Lotuspaw got to her paws and looked around. She didn’t know where she was, and her pelt prickled with uncertainty as her heart began to pound.
“Ah, you’re finally here.”
A voice made Lotuspaw cry out in surprise. She whipped around and saw Patchpaw strolling towards her, his pelt smooth and his expression slightly bored.
He walked past her, into the trees.
“Come on, we’re going to be late.”
“Late for what?” Lotuspaw asked, scampering up to him and trying to force her own fur to flatten. No way was she going to admit to him how scared she had been!
Patchpaw didn’t look at her. “For training.”
Lotuspaw crinkled her nose. “What training? Aren’t we asle—“ her voice failed her as they both reached the edge of a clearing. Down below, milling around a mossy, jagged rock in the center of the glade, were three cats Lotuspaw didn’t recognize.
She was certain that Patchpaw could smell her fear-scent, but he didn’t even acknowledge her; the black and white apprentice padded into the clearing like he had done this a hundred times.
Still not wanting to show her fear, Lotuspaw followed him.
“Patchpaw,” a ginger she-cat meowed sternly, looking down at Patchpaw in disapproval. “You’re late.”
“I know, but I had to wait for her to arrive.” Patchpaw pointed at Lotuspaw with his tail. She creeped up to stand by his side, meekly looking up at the she-cat.
“H-hi,” Lotuspaw stammered, her gaze flitting between the ginger she-cat, who looked faintly annoyed, a blue-gray tom with a dour expression, and a menacing white she-cat.
“Now that the little runt’s here, let’s start training,” the tom said roughly. “I’ll take her as my apprentice.”
“And who said you were going to apprentice her, Rivershine?”
Rivershine shot a glare at the white she-cat who had spoken and bared a snarl. “I just did.”
“Calm down, both of you,” the ginger she-cat cut in, her tail tip twitching impatiently. “Rivershine, you can train Lotuspaw; Snowfall, just get over it. Now, Patchpaw, come on.”
The ginger cat led Patchpaw a few fox-lengths away, and Lotuspaw was left alone with the two grumpy cats.
Rivershine looked down at her with disdain. Lotuspaw looked up at him with confusion.
“I already have a mentor,” she told him, as he led her to where Patchpaw was practicing some sort of crouch. “His name is Curlsplash, and—“
“I don’t care about your daytime mentor,” Rivershine snapped. “I’m the one who’ll be training you when you sleep.”
“Are you a StarClan cat?” Lotuspaw asked. Rivershine let out a soft growl.
“No. And stop asking questions. That ginger stray is Sunheart, and you’ll be learning how to be the best warrior you can be for your clan.”
Excitement made Lotuspaw’s paws tingle, and she bounded over to Patchpaw and Sunheart.
“Really?” She asked them both. “You’ll teach me how to be a great warrior?”
Sunheart, who had looked at Rivershine with contempt for letting his apprentice interrupt her training session with Patchpaw, purred. “Of course we will. We just want one little thing from you.”
Lotuspaw’s heart sank. She didn’t have anything to offer, as an apprentice of only a moon. “What is it?”
“A promise.”
“Oh, like when I get my warrior name?”
“Just like that,” Sunheart assured her. Rivershine stalked up to Lotuspaw and fixed her with a stare.
“Do you pledge your loyalty to us, the cats who will help you achieve everything you desire?”
Patchpaw sidled up to Sunheart. “Make the promise, Lotuspaw. I already made mine.”
Lotuspaw looked at the cats around her and thought about what they were offering. I’ll be the greatest warrior in RiverClan, and then I can protect everybody! She glanced at Patchpaw shyly. And if achieving everything I desire means being closer with Patchpaw—maybe even becoming his mate one day. . .
“I promise.”
